Lucky Stone
One thing about working a Friday night in an emergency room is that it is very rarely dull. Last night one of our "regulars" came in. Usually he's pretty content after we give him a sandwich and some juice. Sometimes he leaves after he's consumed his sandwich in the waiting room and sometimes he actually sticks around to see the doctor. Last night he stuffed his sandwich and juice in his back pack (which also contained a functioning walkman which had beach boy music playing...) and wanted to see the doctor. While waiting in his exam room, he came out and started giving each of the staff a "lucky stone", one of those colored glass beads used for decorating. He told us not to let anyone else touch it and it would bring us luck. Some of the staff didn't want to keep theirs. I kept my stone, not as a lucky charm but as a nice reminder of my blessings.

Janet,
I saw your comment on my blog....I work in an ER too!
I can picture your 'regular' very well... we call them 'frequent flyers'. :)
Great blog! I've bookmarked it to keep up with your knitting and your ER escapades.

PS- just now realized that you may not knit! I naturally assumed that you did, since you posted on my knitting blog. :) I may have to get you started....it's good for the stress of an ER.

Abbey, I did knit a sweater in high school so I have some basic skills and I haven't knit because I have a mother in law and sister in law who would knit anything I wanted and do it so wonderfully. BUT, you have inspired me and I have a friend who is very willing to help me...I may be knitting something soon!
When I worked in an ambulance billing service I had to deal with regulars like that too (thankfully just over the phone most of the time). You know, if a couple minutes of your time makes him happy and you aren't overwhelmed with other duties at the time, what's the harm? I know that my conversations with some of the "regulars" brightened their day.
